Delaney Gray impresses with two runner-up finishes in Legend car debut

RALEIGH, N.C. – Making her Legend car debut, Delaney Gray delivered a pair of runner-up finishes on Saturday afternoon at Wake County Speedway.

The reigning INEX Bandolero Bandit North Carolina State champion wasn’t originally planning to race in the Young Lions division Saturday, but an agreement with her father, Brandon Gray, led to a change of plans.

“We went to the track a couple weeks ago to let her learn to shift gears and use the clutch in a legend car, before we left, we were mostly up to speed within three to four tenths of race winning speed,” Brandon Gray said. “We had no intentions of racing this weekend, but we told her if she could get within two tenths of pole speed then we would let her race. She did exactly that.”

Delaney Gray made the most of the opportunity to race a Legend car for the first time by scoring back-to-back runner-up finishes in a pair of 20-lap features on Saturday afternoon.

The first female driver to win the INEX Bandolero Bandit North Carolina State championship is already thinking about what she can do better in her next start as she continues her move through the grassroots racing ranks.

“Racing a Legend is so different than a bandolero with shifting gears, learning how to use the clutch and so much more horsepower,” Delaney Gray said. “I thoroughly enjoyed racing the Legend today. It was an amazing experience, but it wouldn’t be possible without my team Dillion Spain Motorsports, Blaise Brinkley, my family, friends, and sponsors, especially the good Lord above giving me the strength to do everything.”

Delaney would like to thank her family and all of her sponsors, including Carolina Family Pool & Patio, MPM Marketing, Bob’s Muffler Shop of Goldsboro, W.G. Speeks Inc., Carolina Mobile Refrigeration, K1 RaceGear and Swift Springs.
