SWANSBORO, N.C. – On Saturday, Aug. 2., Delaney Gray enjoyed what she described as the perfect day.

Racing in front of family and friends at Carteret County Speedway, Gray scored her first victory with the Allison Legacy Series.

“This means the absolute world,” said an excited Gray, who turns 13 later this month. “I had to sit in my car for a minute or two to just get myself together because I was crying so much. I’m just so thankful.”

Gray was consistent throughout the day at the four-tenths-mile oval. She was third fastest in practice and qualified second, her first front row start since joining the Allison Legacy Series.

A race winner at Carteret County in a bandolero, Gray entered Saturday’s race with experience on her side as she looked to secure her first Allison Legacy Series victory.

That experience paid dividends. When the green flag waved Gray settled into fourth but was able to move into third after a series of restarts.

She held that position until late in the race when contact between the two leaders allowed her to take the race lead for the first time. She would go on to lead the remainder of the race to secure an emotional victory in front of her friends and family.

“All my family was here to support me,” said Gray, who entered the weekend second in Allison Legacy Series points. “It was just an awesome night. It meant a lot. It was really special tonight with all my friends and family here. It meant a lot. I was able to stay with my aunt and uncle at their beach house before the race. It was just awesome. We had a really good day.

“I can’t thank my dad and my crew chief Blaise enough for always believing in me and continuing to push me to be better. I also need to thank my special crew members Zach and Matt for being here for this race. They have been so busy with their families and new children, so it meant everything that they made time to come today.

“I also want to thank Carolina Family Pool & Patio, MPM Marketing, Firm360, Bob’s Muffler Shop, Swift Springs, K1 RaceGear, the good Lord for keeping me safe and I know she can probably hear me, but my GaGa passed away a couple months ago and I know she was watching over me. This one is for you GaGa.”
